The Howard Johnson by Wyndham Traverse City receives mixed reviews, with many guests citing cleanliness and maintenance issues despite a relatively low price point. While some appreciate the breakfast and location, recurring problems with bugs, bed quality, and overall upkeep significantly detract from the guest experience. Recent reviews highlight serious concerns regarding infestations and property condition.
Upon returning to the room the evening of our stay we found what was identified as an Asian Roach in the shower. We immediately packed up and went to another property. I gave the roach to the front desk person and requested a call from the manager. That was 5 days ago - no call, no refund, nothing.
Price was perfect, which should have told me everything, really. Even in the off season, this place was about the cheapest around. Front desk staff were incredibly nice and friendly. Got into our room (walked up stairs that were carpeted and looked rusty. Also didn't feel stable) and started looking around. Burned lampshades were not amusing. I wiped everything down before setting anything anywhere (a normal habit for me when traveling). Got out the UV flashlight & didn't really find anything except for the typical water drips on the bathroom walls (its drywall & can't really be cleaned, so I get it). Found a black spider on the side of the bed, but my boyfriend killed it before I could get a picture of it. Long gaps in the door weather stripping. First use of the hot tub was okay. Had to rinse it out since there were little hairs on the bottom. Turned on the cold tap and brown water came out for a second before running clear (rinsed it out again & wore my bikini suit bottoms). Shower stall is small and with a straight shower curtain rod, the bottom of the curtain clings to your ankles because of the airflow (GROSS!). A shower door or curved shower rod would solve that issue. The water temperature out of the shower head was not always consistent: one second it was fine then the next it was scalding hot. King size bed was sunken in the middle. Pillows were flat as can be after laying your head on them. Fitted sheet did not fit properly so I had to keep pushing it back on. The first night, I realized the entire building shook when a large semi truck drove by on the main road. Anytime anyone walked by the door outside, it shook a little (depended on how many people walked by/if they were running, etc). Could hear most of what was going on outside, but the walls between rooms seemed insulated enough to dead sound (could still hear our neighbors walking around if they stomped loud enough). Floor creaked in some spots. It was quiet otherwise (but it was also off-season). Breakfast was grab & go which consisted mostly of microwave oatmeal & granola bars (so we got Starbucks every morning since it's just down the street). Ultimately, this place is okay If you need a place to sleep (which is pretty much what we did since we were up there for a weekend vacation). Just remember: the price reflects in what you get. I will not be staying here again.
I've paid 3x the price and had half the experience this place gives before. The breakfast was better then most higher end places ive been to, rooms were clean, staff was friendly. Only downside is that the price seems to bring in a more shady customer base ????
Rooms are small & pics are deceiving. Smoke stained walls, burnt lamp shade. 1st room didn't have sheets, towels not cleaned. etc. Ended up moving rooms...Rusty water. its an old super 8 motel.
The lady at the desk was nice. We noticed ants and little bugs in the bathroom. Once we laid on the beds we started itching and noticed lil red spots all on our hips and legs. Didn't wanna look but we did and there were tiny bugs all bunched together in the crease of the beds and under the sheets. I've got plenty of pictures
We had bed bugs in our first room and the second room we got put in had water in the ceiling light fixture. We emailed pictures of the bed bugs to the email they gave us and expected at least a partial refund, but that hasn't happened. I am extremely disappointed and disgusted. I used to recommend this hotel to people and stay here. I will never be back to this property after this horrible experience. Stay somewhere else.
Really nice room and breakfast too. Toaster for the waffles and pancakes was very nice! Boiled eggs, cereal, hot tea, coffee… was a beautiful and satisfying breakfast!?????? happy to find this place and will be happy to come back any time ?
Room are adequate but needs major update. Shower doesn't spray much water. We were there 5 days and asked multiple times for fresh towels, but never got them until we took them off their cart. With all the hotels in TC, we won't go back
Fairly dirty place overall. Yes, rooms have been renovated to a certain extent, but still dirty. Carpet feels dirty with stains. Dirty under the bed with trash and other. Pillows are lifeless and small. Bed sinks in the middle. Spider webs and dead bugs everywhere. Our AC unit wouldn't adjust to high fan speed, only low. On a 90 degree day with sun beating on the room, that's not enough to keep the room cool. Ice machine hasn't been cleaned in a long time. Nasty mold and particles at the bottom of the ice bucket after it melted! YUCK! Shower water temp would change between hot and cool without touching the handle. I don't feel clean after leaving this room. The breakfast? Would you like some expired gas station pastries? Not good! And for $200 per night? NOT WORTH IT!!! And of course, this review will be met with a canned response with no action.
I felt I had been catfished from misleading pictures and review ratings upon very first walking into my room. To get to our room on the second floor, my family had to climb a rusted staircase while navigating chunks of rusty metal and rubber covering that had broken loose littering the steps - this made me anxious each time i had to take my young children up or down them. When i opened the door, I was immediately put off put an overwhelming musty odor. As I went to set some items on the beds, my heart sank further as i realized how collapsed the center of both matresses were. The pillows were no bigger than throw pillows and extremely lumpy. Though the bathroom initially seemed acceptable, there were small ants and millipedes crawling on the floor by morning. At one point my toddler dropped her cup under the bed, and upon retrieving it i discovered a collection of garbage under the bed. I also learned at that point that the room's musty smell was coming from the carpet which was damp throughout the room. The air unit was loud and rattled all night. There were a mere two tissues in the tissue box and only two bath towels stocked in a room booked for a family of 5. Okay, the breakfast area looked nice, so at least there can be some redemption there right? WRONG! Individually wrapped sugary baked goods, cereals, and oatmeal packets were all that was offered. Ok there was some bagels, but when i asked for cream cheese I was told they're all out and waiting for their shipment to arrive. The coffee was absolutely awful like it had been sitting in your local church lady's basement for the last 10 years. Blegh!!! I was so disappointed in this place. Definitely won't stay here again.
